CareFusion

If you've ever watched ER or Grey's Anatomy then you've probably seen this shining star of the infusion system world quietly playing its part in several hospital scenes. CareFusion broke ground in the medical world in 2001 when it introduced the CareFusion Medley Medication Safety System which integrates the administration and monitoring of IV drug infusions, helping to decrease the number of drug delivery errors and potential harm to patients.

As is the case in many industries today, the competitive nature of the medical marketplace necessitates continuous innovation coupled with short time to market expectations. Add into the mix strict regulatory and quality requirements and you're left with a challenging recipe for success. A long time player in medical device manufacturing, GM Nameplate's design engineers worked closely with CareFusion's engineers during the initial design phase to help speed up the process and make sure the Alaris Medley system was the first of its kind in hospitals.

The challenge for GM Nameplate's engineers was designing the tactile user interface (keypad, shielding, spacer layers and fiberoptic lighting) to be incorporated in a pre-produced bezel. Through careful testing and prototyping, GM Nameplate was able to determine the best methods for recessing the surface mount LEDs on the membrane layer and integrating the fiberoptic lighting. The shield thickness was also increased without altering the tactile feel or adversely affecting the overall thickness of the membrane assembly. GM Nameplate continues to produce the membrane assembly for CareFusion today.
